5 baccalauréat
baccalauréat [bakalɔʀea]masculine nounb. (au Canada = licence) ≈ BA━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━The bac, as it is popularly known, is the school leaving examination all French « lycée » students take in their final year. Before beginning their baccalauréat studies, pupils choose a specialization known as a « série », represented by an initial letter: a bac with a scientific bias is known as a « bac S » (for « scientifique ») while an arts-oriented bac is referred to as a « bac L » (for « littéraire »), for example. When the word bac is followed by a plus sign and a number, this refers to the number of years of formal study completed since obtaining the baccalauréat qualification: « bac + 3 » refers to the « licence » or equivalent, « bac + 4 » to the « maîtrise » etc. These abbreviations are often used in job advertisements to indicate the level of qualification required.* * *known informally as the bac, is an examination sat in the final year of the lycée ( la terminale), so usually at age 17 or 18. Students sit exams in a fairly broad range of subjects in a particular category: the bac S places the emphasis on the sciences, for example, whilst the bac L has a literary bias. There are three main types (filières) of bac, each corresponding to a specific field: bac L (littéraire) being arts-oriented, bac S (scientifique) science-based and bac ES (économique et social) economics and social studies. Within each domain various obligatory and optional subjects can be combined to give up to eleven different types of diploma. There is also the bac professionnel which offers thirty-eight different specialist or vocational subjects. -
6 UFR
The current designation of the main structural units of French universities, formerly known as Facultés and as UER (Unités d'Enseignement et de Recherche). Until the eudcation reforms following the events of 1968, French universities had little in the way of central structure, but were made up of autonomous Faculties. Les Facultés were officially renamed UER (unités d'enseignement et de recherche), and then later UFR. However, many universities still use the word Faculté to describe some or all of their UFR, particularly where modern UFR correspond to old traditional university faculties, such as a Faculty of Science or a Faculty of Arts ( Faculté des lettres). The word Faculté is rarely used in cases where huge old faculties have been broken down into much smaller units. See higher education in France
